1.8 SPi engine upgrades

    We have a Mk3 cab with the lethargic 1.8 SPi engine fitted.

    Are there any worthwhile tuning mods (inexpensive) to wring more power out of these engines or is it really a case of an engine swap?

    Are they the same as the Mk2 driver (i.e. GTI cam, zorst, etc?)

    I have had 3 of these versions and i gave up asking this question.

    It's new engine or new car i'm afraid

    It depends which one you've got. If it's the 75 bhp you can use 90 bhp bits for an stealth extra 15 ponies. The trouble with real tuning is that the ECU works on throttle position, so if you tune it to take more air, when you move the throttle it will always be lean. Cruising conditions are OK as the Lambda feedback will adjust the mixture for you, within limits...

    You'd think they'd be an ideal candidate for megasquit, already having TPS, but the VW TPS gives really weired resistance values.
