1.8T owners beware - structural weakness

    A short story before the picture. Mk4 1.8T AGU Golf 1999 100k FSH. The car had the cambelt changed which requires removal of the driver's side engine mount. Apparently you are not supposed to re-use the 3 bolts BUT the mechanic did!. Cue engine mount giving way 2 weeks later. Fortunately no major damage and with "new bolts" all was good. Until 9 months later that is.

    Second time round the same thing happens - again fortunately at low speed - but this time it looks as if the cambelt came off (so possible valve damage etc). Worse though, is this -

    As you can see, the bolt hole for the mount is part of the casting and has broken off. Apparently this is not uncommon and is not confined to the AGU block (there are many posts on tdiclub). It can be bodge repaired with a bracket but really needs a new block.

    So make sure you check your mounts :)

    Usually a heavy bump brakes the block i've naver known the bolts be the problem [:s]
