15" or 17" alloys?

So I've been toying for a while about buying some new wheels for the track car... But do I stick with 15" or go to 17"?

Not much in the cost of tyres between the two sizes. I know the 15" will give a slightly better final drive for acceliration but the 17" will have a thinner side wall and may be better for handling. Also the 17" will make the car look completely different.

    What's your thoughts?

15" standard bbs rims, wheels are about the only thing I haven't upgraded yet

For a MK3 VR6 its 17s all the way. One thing to consider is what tyres are available. For many years I've used part worn slicks fantastic value for money. There are plenty of used 210/205mm slicks available from Dunlop on the market and even a fair few 235mm slicks if you want to go that wide. You won't find anything at all in 16s and even wheel choices are limited. Same with 15s no race series use this size now so no part work slicks and even 8x15s are very hard to find.

The perfect wheel is a 8x17 ET30 for the VR6.

Also at some point a brake upgrade will be on the cards as well and a 330mm disc will fit under with ease. I'm running 355mm discs now.

    Thanks Mike.

Wasn't considering 16" as the tyre choice is not that good for track tyres. The 17" are my preferred choice but though I'd check I wasn't going to loose out on handling or drivability over the 15"

No, 17s are perfect. but do some calculations for damper strut clearances for ET's on 8's. Are you running studs yet?

Judging from how your car went at Brands, I would suggest a change in gearing (shorter than current) to compensate for the larger wheel. 17s will kill the acceleration on a Mk3 VR6 with a 3.39 FDR.

Thanks Eddie. I know the 17's will lower the acceleration. Wasn't sure how much it would be noticed. At some stage a lower final drive will be on the cards with lsd but all is on hold while I'm buying a new house. At least gearbox anyway ;)
