spotted these cams on ebay,http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271421585...EWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_44wt_959 he`s using ford 1800 diesel followers,anybody tried these and do they need modding like a cossy one`s ?
Prof: With you on that, so you cant run a hydro follower on a mech cam, but you should be able to do it the other way round, shouldn't you? Jon
but to no real advantage. I think Mr Hillclimber has some great info on mech cam usage and makes over 200bhp from 2L
Not sure I agree with you. I can offer the following; 1. Mech followers are lighter 2. Once set they are equally quiet and offer accurate following of the profile. (no compressible oil) 3. Reliable, nothing to go wrong 4. Higher rev ceiling for the same valve springing 5. Lighter valve springing for a given rev limit due to 1. 6. More bottom end lubrication 7. You can pocket pistons to a tighter more measurable clearance Made most of these up, but hey ho! I'm going to try it!!!!!!!! Jon
Thread revival. 8 months later the engine build has restarted. Slow? You bet. Anyway, struggling to get the head with cams, followers installed, to turn, all built up. Now suspecting valve spring coil bind. It has KC151612 springs in , but cannot find anything on the web. Inners are 5mm longer than std, outers 3mm. Anybody got measurements for the std springs installed height? Or the 612's? Anybody know if std ones will do 11.4mm lift? Thanks Jon Building race engines is never straight forward.....
Funny how having time out and a cup of tea can make what apparently is a mental mountain into 'of course.....) Checked the fancy carlos fandango springs in the vice for coil bind against the installed height in the head. Yes, 0.4mm coil bind. So the two options are; guides out, machine the head seat bases, guides in. OR use some different springs Yippee, job rolling again Thanks, Jon
Final post on this one, till I get it running; This is the poor man's alternatigve to a 500 hit on spring/titanium retainer set; 1. Make tool to hold top cap in lathe. 2. Modify std top caps (tipped tools, rock hard) by taking 1mm off the inner location spigot so the kent VS39 springs sit properly square. 3. Use Lotus twin cam lower steel cups on the bottom of the outer spring 4. Remove 4 thou off the last coil OD so the spring sits properly in the lotus cup 5. Make a 3mm high 'step that fits inside the outer springto preload the inner spring, with a little centralising spigot on. 6. 1mm off the top off the guide in situ. (mill) 7. 1mm off the stem oil seal bottom ring (very gently...) One down, another 15 to go. Total cost of the above 31 not including some odd bits of steel stock I'm one happy tinkerer. Lets hope it all holds together ok.................. Jon
