Looking at a 16v Mk3 with 75k miles and the guy said the cambelt is not due a change till the next service. Is this true? I thought it was a VW interval to change them at 60k miles.
In out 'autodata' type cam belt replacement book at work, for most VWs it doesn't specify an actual replacment interval. I just change mine once a year for peace of mind.
If there's no record of it being changed at 75k I would get it done regardless. Some engines are 100,000 miles intervals now, that's too long imo!
i'd get its changed just for peice of mind. You have to thing that if the cam belts breaks then your going to be looking at a big repair bill so for the sake of 100 to get a garage to change it, its just not worth the worry
I believe the correct service interval is 60K but beware, the cambelts on ABFs commonly fail earlier than that. Mine went at 48K and when phoning around at the time several other people had had similar failures. If in doubt, change it - it's a damn sight cheaper than rebuilding the head! As GVK says, for peace of mind change it annually. Belts are cheap as chips. Martyn '94 Vento 16v
