My youngest son is taking his practical driving test shortly and hopes to pass. (theory already passed). He has had provisional licence and has CBT - been riding a scooter for 14 months now. He currently owns a Mk1 Golf driver undergoing restoration and a roadgoing Mk3 1.3 4+E which he insures TPFT as a learner driver for around 100/month. He's just been shopping around the usual places for insurance for when he eventually gets his full licence and the prices are astonishingly high. 5k+ for any kind of cover at all. Some insurers won't touch a car of this age either. I will not go down the route of named driver and "front" his insurance as it's not me who will be main driver - this is highly risky and could lead to having insurance cancelled or failure to pay out if in accident (then the fine and 6 points on your licence too!). I was looking at a new car with free insurance but the age limit for these is 19+ from what i've seen. Has anyone got any good advice or experience?
No good experience sorry. Young persons insurance has rocketed these last few years. I'm 25 and still pay 1200 TPFT!. Mainly because of my postcode. If i were to move only 20 miles away it would drop a MASSIVE 1000!!! They are cashing in big time recently, with no government intervention they can charge what the hell they like, same as petrol. And when you do need them they leave you high and dry.
My daughter managed to get hers for 1500 for a 1.2 Punto with my wife & I as named drivers, that was with Diamond but I think they only insure females. Best quote from comparison sites was about 4k
Well my daughter insured her 1.0 Arosa when she passed her test 16-18 months ago at the age of 18.........her insurance was around 1200 tpft.
You need to shop around more or use a specialist insurer, I'm 27 and was paying less than half of what you are when I was 25 and that was fully comp.
Have you looked at the tracker based insurers? A box is installed in the car to monitor speed, times, locations etc... This results in less risks taken by the driver and a safer driver and therefore cheaper premiums. Insurance can come down dramatically, but it can be something a lot of people object to? https://www.coverbox.co.uk/how_coverbox_works.php http://www.insurethebox.com/low-mil...-car-insurance-for-reducing-the-cost-of-cover
Thanks dude - I will recheck but the lad said he'd tried to access similar scheme through Coop but they advised "computer says no"........car too old?!
Some insurers will now give you a 25% discount if you use an in-car camera. You might need to have a look into this as I heard it on the radio on Monday.
When i passed my test at 17 i dinked my Peugeot 306 and had to claim (doh). I then got insurance on a MK3 Golf 1.4 four months after passing my test with a claim on my record and it was 2300. That was mighty expensive back then but it does drop a lot with a NCB because when i was 18 i had a MK3 GTI 16v for 1300 with 1 Years NCB, and now i have a Audi S3 for 1600 with 2 years NCB.
Well, he passed his test first thing this morning (yay!) so I guess he will need this sooner than later.
They were talking a little bit of the fake truth on the radio. Looking into it now, the camera is 280ish and adrian flux only give 15% off for having one.
I would have thought you have some insurance sorted but if not and if anyone else is after an alternative site to try I can recommend this site: http://www.cheapinsurancelocator.co.uk/
