Been speaking to a guy about putting a new engine in my Mk2 GTi 8v, its gonna be either the 2l 16v ABF or the VR6, gonna cost me 1300 if i supply the bits myself or 2500 all in if he supplies the bits.

My question is, which do we think is gonna be the better one, with reasons for your decision?

    Cheers guys

    Paul

I would say ABF mildly tuned will keep up with a VR and still give a reasonable return on fuel.

Seems a bit pricey though doesn't it??

Surely engine conversions wouldn't cost 1300 to do?

How many hours labour is that then? About 40 hours on mechanics wages???? [:s]

My local mechanic will do engine conversions for 150 if I supply the parts or 200 if he has to convert the wiring etc.

Personally i'm a huge fan of the VR6, I have the 2.9 corrado lump in mine, and it really shifts and sounds awesome. Only downside is fuel, which is worth bearing in mind.

got to agree that 1300 is far too much money. i paid 300 to have the 2.0 16v dropped into my Mk1 and that's a fair bit more of an effort that putting an ABF into a Mk2 8v.

I think it was me wasn't it?

1300 is good for a vr swap, specially when you know its going to be a good one.

I paid 1000 for mine to be fitted by a VW 'specialist' and it was a mess, it ended up costing me a further 600 to get it sorted at Awesome [8(]

I have an ABF in my MK2 and its great fun. Can get 40mpg out of the abf too if it's driven sensibly. I get that sometimes but it's motorway driving.

Pity i had the same problems as 1990 when it came to having it fitted.

300quid!!! A proper place would charge that to undo and remove the abs, lighting and other redundant wires from the mk3 loom. Unless they just cut the ends off and leave them on [:s]

If your paying for it to be done go for the VR, the resale valve of the car will be miles higher than a 2.0 16v.

Think that will be the plan for my MK2, even though the engine i got makes it shift along nicely. Just want that V6 burble [:D] And yes i know i have a MK3 VR but it aint no MK2
