Yes there is a X flow head. The head is used on 2.0 litre New Beetles. Do a search on this forum as there are plenty of posts. Just one thing though, what year is your Mk 3? I'm asking because you'll need a cat for the MoT, using carbs you'll end up destroying your cat. I think you'll be better of using throttle bodies if you're thinking of going down the X flow route.

If you're going to the trouble of an engine swap to use carbs I would recommend a 16v. Carbs really come into their own an a higer revving engine it takes a lot of work to get an advantage out of the carbs on an 8v lump. Although, they do sound awesome!
I ran them on a mk2 8v although a x-flow lump and I wished I had gone for a 16v, I ended up with better performance from smaller choke sizes as the 8v couldn't suck enough air.

Then you'll fail every emissions test on the planet using carbs.

The flange normally on the front of the head is on the side.
