I have been reading the car weights thread and im in the thinking stage at the minute but what is a realistic weight of a stripped out mk2.

here is what i was thinking,

stripped out shell, no carpet etc, original glass, 2 buckets, 6 point cage, 8V engine on ITB's

what sort of weights do the mk2's get down to in the series, i know what the minimum is but are they all on the limit?

The EV/PB Mk2s in the Golf GTI C/ship were originally 950kgs min weight incl driver. Generally people couldn't get right down to that due to limitations on prep + person weight. It later went up to 975kg.

So minus driver, I'd say they're just sub 900 kgs. Standard inlets, glass, all underseal still on the car.

there is a certain irony to a diet book written by an author called Lyle McDonald

besides if Alan go's on a diet he wont be able to leave the house in a stiff breeze unless he teathers himself down...

If you're not having to stick to any series regulations, you shouldn't have much trouble getting your car sub 850kg

Once all of the interior is out a big one to go for is removing the whole sunroof cassette, there's a lot of weight in that.

Get every bit of bitumen sound deadening out, including all the stuff behind the dash.
(I find a slim, flexible paint scraper the best tool for that)

A light weight battery, not necessarily an expensive race one but maybe a second hand one from a smaller car will save you a couple of kgs.

Exhausts weigh a lot too. get a 4 branch manifold & a lightweight single box system from somewhere like Pipewerx.

Light weight wheels are a must. You can pick up a set of Team Dynamics pro race 1.2's off ebay for reasonable money.

After that it's a case of looking in every nook & cranny of the car & thinking " does that need to be there?" If not, take it out!

    I hope this helps.

Are you turning the daily into a track car Alan, or is this another one? Are you still going to keep it road legal?

800-850 is achieveable I reckon, especially if you start lightening bonnets, tailgates, etc, and fit poly windows.

At the minute im just making lists and planning things out. ill be collecting bits along the way. I need to get rid of the white part stripped shell, to make space.

the ill be one the look out for either a solid 3 door or a pre built track car, depends on funds and whats about?

yes it will be road legal

Want a Mk2 Rocco shell - free, or cheap if you want it rolling.

They're lighter than those big fat Mk2 golf things ;)

Dan they might fit too well, and never want releasing, i have heard that those tricky inlet manifold bolts are notorious for seizing when this induction system is installed....

    hi mate hows it going.
my mk2 is 890kg dry weight.
    830 is possible on a non-PAS car I think.
racing battery, poly windows and fiberglass bonnet and tailgate being the key at 500 for losing the last 50kg.
pesch? i think is the polish place for the fiberglass bits...with fiberglass doors you could go sub 800kg!!!! but they're something like "250 each!

160bhp & 830 kg is 190bhp/tonne so should go like hell!

If you get busy with a grinder and holesaw you can get steel doors down to about the same weight as fibreglass ones. See Tony B's doors for an example. Same with tailgate, and to a lesser extent, bonnet. If you've got the cage multipointed in, you can then go round some of the internal panels and do the same.

Al - scirocco in question is this one.
