Easer and cheaper to replace it with good second hand item

Get a quick rack from audi tt or r32, 2.2 turns. best mod i ever done on my a3!

Also does help if you get tt hubs so they bolt on correctly from underneath, and if you get cast wishbones gives you more camber adjustment

Changed the rack on my S3 a few months back, not too bad a job. You need to drop the subframe to get the rack out but thats not too bad as only the dogbone bolts to it, the engine it mounted to the chassis legs.

The bolts are stretch bolts so you should really replace them all. I might still have the list of part numbers around somewhere.

worth trying the recalibration though. there may be a way to do it maunaully, like going lock to lock a few times.

not sure, get the mate with vagcom on it

I had to do this with my 4motion. you need vag com and it will talk you through the steps to calibrate it.

The steering has spun whilst you had the rack off, a simple fix but you need diagnostic equipment.

Disconnect the steering column from the rack, (from the inside of the car)

plug in diagnostics, turn the steering wheel until you have 0 degree reading, then re-attach the the column to the rack

    faults should clear.
