i suspect they're harder to fit and more unreliable...get the set up from a scrappy (could take the wiring as well).

I got a front kit from EuroCarParts. Easy to fit, works well, good power on them, and they bolt straight into the holes for the manual ones. It comes with all wiring and switches and a face-plate for the slot above the cigarette lighter draw, which you can easily screw into place. Looks quite original.
Haven't bothered with the rears (passengers slow the car down!)

Used to fit SPAL windows to various cars when doing the old car alarm installation job. Nosier than the standard ones, but seemed fine. We never had any car back complaining about them.

I've got an ECP one on the drivers side of my GTI, it is fine, quite fast but a little noisy. The genuine passenger one on the other hand is crap, very slow and sqeecky. I think i'm gonna have to get a new one there soon too........:(

IMO the VW leccy windows are pants. The motor spindles rust and squeek and then seaze, the mech are poop too.

As already said, the spal windows are noisier, but work well. I've fitted loads to various cars(including golfs), and as long as they are fitted correctly, then they are fine.
