ive herd that if your engines tappets are worn/noisey if you put atf in it will quieten them down. is this true as atf is a hydrolic type fluid (BAD for engines) any ideas

its the solvents/detergents in the atf thats great at cleaning things, itll clean off the varnish off everything allowing oil back into tappets properly

my 188k mile mk3 abf is silent tappet wise and has had atf quite a few times

Yes it's true if you do it right... do a search on "ATF trick".

I've used it in two of my cars with no problems.

I did it on my 155k mile pb, when i took the rocker cover off i was surprised how clean it was in there, alot cleaner than my 30k mile AGG thats for sure,

the thing seems to be not to drive the engine too hard whilst its in there, as mike say search 'ATF trick'

I've tried using it but my tappets are still very noisy.

200-300 miles is quite normal to use it for. on mine, if i take the oil filler cap off with the engine running it tries to chuck the oiil out at me.

seems strange that its still very noisy
