I'm wondering what options are open to me for uprating the brakes on my 91 16v.

I'm on Classic Audi as 'Addicted'... spent a lot of time on this subject as I've recently upgraded mine.

Be careful though as not all front hubs are the same. My front hubs are 92 16v and the brake discs have a height of 56mm... some others have much shallower discs.

Do you have 256mm discs at the moment? with girling 54 calipers? (similar to golf 16v etc.. except the Audi 256 disc is thicker than a vw 256 disc)

Personally I now run 288 x 25 discs with 57mm Girling calipers using redrilled Sharan discs. Using the Sharan discs means I can easily upgrade to 300 or 312mm discs in future.

The Sharan does use the 57mm caliper, but mine are from a V6 Audi 100.

Depending on your disc height you can 'simply' convert to 280 x 22mm discs by using Corrado/Golf3 280mm carriers with your existing calipers.

Other options include Ford Focus ST170 discs which are 4 x 108 and 300 x 25mm diameter.. using Porsche Boxster calipers..

    Hmmm OK..

Are you sure you've not fallen foul of the G60 caliper vs G60 caliper problem?

In VW GTI circles the G60 caliper refers to the Girling 54 with 280mm x 22mm brake setup from the Corrado G60.

In Audi circles the G60 caliper refers to the Girling 60 with 276 x 25mm brake setup from S2's and Audi 80 V6's..

If you have the VW G60 calipers (Girling 54's) setup you have got the same actual caliper as currently fitted but with carriers to allow the use of 280mm discs. These cannot be used with the 276mm discs as they are 25mm wide. However you can get a 280mm x 22mm 4 x 108 disc (54mm disc height).

If you have the Audi G60 calipers (Girling 60's) then you're fine.

Cool. You'll find the Girling 60's with the 276 x 25mm gives remarkable braking performance..

turns out my original 256mm discs were 46.2mm high and the 276mm one's are 51.2mm thus causing the disc to foul on the back of the hub assembly,so I fitted a cut down 5mm wheel spacer into each disc and reckon it's sorted this issue
must say it does stop a hell of a lot better and with abs off some serious locking of both wheels ;)

So you fitted a 5mm wheel spacer behind the disc? My only concern would be, what now locates the disc on the hub? as surely a 5mm spacer would lift the disc off its spigot?

There was the tiniest lip that caught the disc it didn't occur to that with so little of the hub locator left it may cause problems I was just happy when they fitted, now you've said that I'm less happy, think I will sort out a couple of hubs and do the job properly thanks for raising the issue mickey.

Can you space the caliper carrier instead?

the caliper set up isn't the issue mickey it's the disc grounding on the backplate.so I doubt spacing the carrier would change things
