Howdo chaps, This is my first post and new to VW's so be gentle with me. We just picked up a few Golfs over the last few weeks to use as projects ie. 93 2.0 ltr 8 valve GTI ( shell bent ) 87 1.8 ltr 16 valve GTI ( no engine ) 89 1.6 ltr Driver We are also getting a 93 2.6 ltr V6 Audi 80 this week. We want to put the V6 into the mk2 GTI but need to know if its gonna be a mare to do or if it can be carried out fairly easily. We have some tinkering knowledge having done a short motor re-build on my old mans mk2 TDI and getting it to run again. If the V6 will go into the mk2 GTI we will then put the 8 valve into the Audi and get shut. ( the 1.6 Driver is for my son to cut his teeth on ) What do you guys think, is it possible/worth it. Treevor
only way it might fit is if you fit it in the back as the audi does not run a transverse eng/box layout, alot of trouble for little gain
I don,t think it will work out , was talking to tsr well before they went through, they were fitting one in to a mk3 , it never got finished , a vr6 will fit ,and its a reasonable easy conversion if you got mechanical experiance
If you're thinking of attempting something like this, i'd say you'd have to make it front engined RWD, using some porsche 924 (or maybe 928/944) parts... But good luck to you because that can't be easy...
I think it is going to be to much of a challange for us taking into acount the facilities we have. I guess we will just go for the 8 valve 2.0ltr in it. The mk2 is in to good a shape to start cutting and shaping for rear wheel drive. What sort of bhp do 8 valvers turn out in standard trim? Thanks for the info tho, my lad is sparked up to have a go at a project. Treevor
120 ish bhp in standard trim without a cat. Up to 150 with a good big valve head and a cam. You could really do with a Mk2 8v head to go on it though - Not sure how you make it fit with the Mk3 head - you'd have to use the Mk3 inlet manifold for a start, to get injector holes.
is that 30v engine? if so i might try and rob my brother in laws A8! i dont think he will notice!!!!! got to be difficult or pointless otherwise it would be a popular conversion and until now i hadnt heard of one
If it's mounted in-line I assume the gearbox is on the back, so the engine's way far forward. The result of that would probably be a wierd looking front end extension and DREADFUL handling.
Half the bulkhead had to be removed & custom fabricated to get the engine & box in & back far enough.
