It has been a while since I written an informative thread on here.
This is partly as I am busy behind the scenes ensuring with the rest of the other guys, this platform is here for all of you to contribute.

Well this week and engineering publication I subscribe to revealed Audi is celebrating 40 years of building their unmistakable 5 cylinder engine.

    This engine debuted in 1976 as a 2.1 10v in the Audi 100 C2.
The history behind the R5 was Audi wanted to a suitable powertrain for the C2 or "Type 43" as it was known internally. 4 cylinders were not desired and R6 engines could not meet packaging or weight distribution requirements. So the 5 cylinder was developed from the EA827 R4.

1977 saw the introduction of fuel injection and the engine fitted to the "5E" (Carb'd cars were "5S".

Later in 1978 Audi produced a NASP 5 cylinder diesel with 70bhp alternative.

With the 5 cylinder engine powering top Audi models, a turbocharged petrol engine entered the line up in 1979 and was fitted to the Audi 200 5T with 170bhp.

In 1980 we got the all famous UR-Quattro with 200bhp from its 10v turbocharged motor. Pretty capable package for both road and track with Hannu Mikkola winning the drivers title in the World Rally Championship in the UR-Quattro in 1983.

That same year Audi graced us with the Sport Quattro. This car featured a short wheel base and a 4 valve/cylinder engine with ~ 302 bhp. Could you imagine yourself on the roads back in the 80s with a 300+ bhp Audi?
With the legendary Swede Stig Blomqvist contesting 11 rounds in the Group B Audi Quattro A2 producing 355 hp, the sport Quattro was the basis for the new Group B race car but with a whooping 444bhp with debuted in the second to last round at Ivory Coast , 1984. Stig won the drivers title and Audi took the manufacturers title.

Audi withdrew from rallying in 1986 but this did not stop them from competing in other events.
In 1987, Walter Rhrl won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in a Audi Sport quattro S1. The 5 cylinder engine developed 590 hp.

In 1989 the IMSA GTO competed in the US touring car scene in delivering 710 hp from its 5 cylinder also making it one of the most powerful Audi works engines.

Back to the humble world of production vehicles at the Frankfurt Auto show in 1989, Audi gave the world another first. the Audi 100 TDI. The first production TDI 5 cylinder with 118bhp and electronic controls.

Then in 1994 we got the 310bhp RS2 Avant. This game changing estate had the grunt of a supercar!

The 5 cylinder was eventually phased out by 1997 as fitted to the A6 TDI and S6 in favour of 6 cylinder V6 engines.

However Audi brought back the 5 cylinder in 2009 powering the 8J TTRS with 335bhp and later on the first "RennSport" A3 the RS3. This development was partly to the new modular approach to engine design, the 5 cylinder a development from V10 engines.

Today in 2016, you can pick up a new TT with ~ 400bhp.

Enthusiasts like Keith Murray and his Dialynx outfit are known to maintain and tune older 5 cylinder cars to optimum road or race spec. They have also created SWB cars from long wheel based cars!

It is hoped that Audi keeps giving us this engine for many more years to come.
Happy 40th to the R5 Audi engine and car fitted with such a gem of an engine!

To create interesting treads...it need people with determination who are prepared to invest time and effort into this club / forum
.. it takes time to search all the data and pictures together. do a proper write up, upload pics, etc, etc....

Often we see then .....Wow, Great, Awesome, Thanks ....and ... that is where the tread end !
    Its hardly rewarding ....

Infact its meant as a starter, to build further on....ITS A FORUM , it means that members / forum users are supposed to step in add something usefull to that tread.....
its not difficult.... everyone can google.....and add something
Sadly no-one seam interested to do the slightest effort...

    OK, then

25valve, I have never heard of that, I thought the 5 valve heads were developed well in the the V6and IL4 period, then when the 5 came back VAG had moved back to the more conventional 4-valve
Was this a development thing that never got into production or something that someone has managed to cobble together? Any background on it?

Good looking manifold for torque, though I could see a bit of a flow imbalance on 1 and 5 with such a small plenum

Afaik Oettinger made a 5V 4 Cyl head and then there was that Audi 5 cyl 25V head that was pretty much a pre production project ... that later formed the basis for the 1.8 T / 20V engines.
Altough V6 engines were choosen instead of 5 Cyl engines for the roadcars, this to be inline with other brands ....

The 5 valve head fitted to a 5 cylinder, well predates the AEB or ADR engines from the B5 Passat/A4 from 1995. .

Cobbled together? No. This was an Audi development

    Background, sure.
The car pictured with the 25v 5 cylinder engine is known as the 'Talladega Audi' from 1986. It was a EU Audi 200 that was rebaged as the USDM Audi 5000CS.
Engine spec was 650 bhp from 2.2 litres @ 2 bar boost pressure, allowing Bobby Unser to achieve a top speed of 206 mph at the Talladega oval circuit in a publicity stunt by Audi.
It was the second most powerful 5 cylinder engine by Audi, with the most powerful 5 cylinder being the Audi Quattro IMSA GTO @ 720 bhp.

Several sites have documented this car and this is one of them >>Clicky<<

User WAUDOla believes more than 25v 5 cylinder was made.

We do know about dave's 7A post on the 25v display engine here.

If anyone has more info feel free to post!
