    Hi All

I have bought a MK2 Golf 16V fitted with AVO coilovers all round, the car has been fully prepped for track days but i am unsure if the front Coilovers are fitted correctly.

When the front wheels are jacked off the ground the top mounts are really loose and can be shaken and moved by the suspension leg or top mount itself, the springs are all held in tight nut this movement concerns me. The top mounts under the bonnet also appear to be made of a neoprene foam, is any of the normal.

    thanks
    Nick

    Any pictures?

The top mounts are meant to drop if you jack it off the ground and the top plate stops it falling through the strut tower. The weight of the car is what holds it onto the rubber top mounts.

i'll try to get some pictures loaded up later , the top mounts are not rubber they are foam ???? searched all over the internet for foam top mounts for a MK2 GTI and cannot find a thing.

When i bought the car they were described as 'front floating top mounts' , does that mean anything to anyone ?

sounds like mk3 mounts which is normal, mk2 one sit better and have a different top plate to stop the mount dropping as much.
but in both with shorter coilovers- mounts will float a bit when jacked up.

Another picture below , they are looking pretty torn up now as the car has been jacked and the suspension on full droop for the last few weeks whilst i waited for me new brake discs to arrive, when the car was lowered back doen they looked like this.

Agreed with Mushy, those foam bits are not standard, that top plate looks like its sitting too high, possibly due to worn rubber mounts underneath.
The foam has been added in an attempt to reduce the movement when jacked up by the looks of it.

i don't think you are going to know what's really going on without removing the struts and having a good look...
