Evening all, I used to be a Club GTi member back in '95 when I bought my 1988 GTi 16v. As often happens, life gets in the way, and she then sat in the garage for the next 20 years. However, a recent Falkirk council planning decision has meant I have to move the car, which has inspired me to get her back on the road. The plan is to build a good, usable classic. Not a show queen or track monster. I'm sure I'll need your help at many points over the build, so I'm looking forward to sharing progress.
So today, for the first time in over two decades, Foxtrot Three Six Zero Uniform Foxtrot Sierra saw sunlight. My local council are building flats on the old garage plot that it's lived on, so today we moved it to its new home. My plan is to initially have the bodywork dealt with. There's some rust, but it's mostly the bottom edge of the driver's door and the arches. The rest of the floor/sills/chassis legs are solid metal. Once it's sealed and usable, I can start dropping out the rear axle, front cross member, anti-roll bars etc for powdercoat. Then it'll be mechanicals. Interestingly, during the last 10 years that I haven't seen the car, someone has broken into the garage, stolen my lovely Zender Trophy alloys and replaced them with a set of 13" steel wheels! A thief with a conscience.
What arseholes! But at least they didn’t steal the car and they didn’t t leave it on bricks. Looks clean, all things considered
That looks like it will come up lovely. If it had been outside for 20yrs it would have been a different story. God bless garages (and f×ck thieves)
Fingers crossed. Truth be told, I'm embarrassed that it's taken me this long to do something with it, but I'm finally looking forward to using that clutch alignment tool I bought in 1997!
Yip, and the 6x9s in the parcel shelf. I did actually have a Supersprint exhaust on it. A second hand purchase at one of Knockhill's infamous track days. A guy shunted his mk2, had what was left dragged back to the pits and immediately announced he was breaking it for spares.
Welcome back and good forsight on keeping it stored away until life meant it became possible to use/restore again. I have sold a 16v oak green golf i didnt have time for and now regret.
