Yet another BBS RM related question from me...

My outer rim bolts are really going to let my RMs down when they go back together, because the bolts look a bit manky and still have lacquer on them, etc. I really can't be bothered trying to clean up about a hundred bolts by hand.

Those of you who've replaced your RM's bolts with chrome ones, where'd you get them from?

Actually, I decided to strip away the lacquer from the bolts I have tonight, and I'm actually quite happy with how the bolts look underneath :)

Chrome them, they will rust as stated without protection. Chemically strip them first to ensure they have a good base then chrome them!

Taking away the milky lacquer reveals that they are chromed already. But they look old and tired. But will probably do for a while.

they are not chromed, they are high tensile steel!

i cleaned mine back but they rusted indoors! if you are
interested i may be able to get you a set of new chromed
bolts from germany. i have some coming over from germany
from a contact very soon and if i think the quality is good
enough i'll start to import them if people want them, they are
in exactly the same style as the bbs bolts and i think theyre
made by schmidt. probably around 90 a set i think, 120
bolts, posted anywhere in england, scotland and wales.
    supergolfs want 144!!!!!!! plus p+p!!!!!!!!!!!

Just get them chromed, that should protect them enough......

I'd like to get them chromed but I've got one quote from a company that came to 2 a bolt! Can anyone recommend someone who's going to do it cheaper please?

    Guys,

I have phoned around some engineering companies and learned that zinc coating would be far, far, far cheaper - and still offer rust protection, and good looks (I can get gold coloured coating, silver coloured zinc coating, etc).

Would this be a good option?

Apparently zinc is stronger than chrome too!

    :o What a ripoff [xx(]

I got a load of stuff chromed just before inters and it came to 100. That was for four sets of wing bolts, boot catch, pair of door catches, three bonnet catches, set of wiper arms, bonnet support, sunroof deflector and my Porsche door handles. It was a big box of stuff!!!

I dont think you get that "bling" with zinc like you do with chrome but the zinc would offer better rust protection than the chrome would..........

I think the main problem mate is the fact that when each part has to go through the process on separately, attached to its own individual wire, etc. So a box containing a few large chunky parts could actually work out far cheaper than 120 little bolts.

Zinc plating, on the other hand, can be done on all parts at once, thrown into a barrel. This one company I phoned said it'd be 25 quid for a barrel of bits.

I know zinc coating won't quite have the bling but to be honest, it seems an attractive option.

so you guys think that those schmidt bolts are a rip off then?

at 90 theyre cheap as they are brand new and chromed,
theyre better quality than the original bbs bolts and you try
getting new bolts in this country! 7mm thread by 1mm pitch just
isn't common, and if you want stainless metric fine you'll be
    paying 1.50 to 2.00 a bolt.

i have had a few quotes for chemical stripping and chroming
the originals that were between 70 and 100, you can also
get them cadmium plated but it looks pooe and wont last for
about 40 or nickel plated as mentioned above which will be
nice for about a month then go grey.

but hey its up to you guys!

The price of them bolts is very good mate!! Esp when compaired to the likes of Supergolfs et all's prices.

Problem for me would be that i'm skint so would work out much cheaper for me to re-use the old bolts but cleaning/chroming them. I'd put them in with some other stuff so the price would work out much better!

So would zinc coating look crap after a while, even with frequent buffing?

Okay, I'm now convinced that I should get them chromed. Can anyone recommend a chroming company that they've used before and, of course, aren't too expensive? I've been phoning around myself and the cheapest place I've found will do them at about 80p each. The company is this one:

    Albion Plating
Unit 20, Star Rd Partridge Green
    Horsham West Sussex
    RH13 8RA
    Tel: 01403 710163

The price seems good but I'm a bit nervous about posting my bolts to a company I've not used before or without recommendation :s

that chrome plating for those bolts, if my maths is correct, works
out at 96 in total. depending on whether i think the bolts i'm
getting are high quality, should be cos made by schmidt, it'll be
cheaper to get new ones off of me at 90!
