    Hi Guys

My MK2 GTI valver went in for it's service today, total bill so far - 975!

    Parts needed thus far;

    Cambelt
    Oil leaking in 2 places
    2 rear wheel bearings
2 new discs at the rear
    2 new rear brake pads
    Heater valve bypass pipes
    Heat shield (behind manifold)
    Gear linkage

Let's hope there's no more surprises!

Cheer me up guys and let me know someone else has been stung by similar charges before!

Where the hell did you take it to be charged that much?! That's at least 800 in labour charges because the parts certainly don't cost that much!!!

I think they saw you coming.

ouch! that's why I do it myself!

I ripped my heatshield off 2 years ago because it was rattling!

gear linkage is a piece of urine - there's a guide on here and a guide for the rear brakes.

    Where do you live?

I'm sure someone on here will do it for you for half that amount.

Was speaking to someone today who's polo failed the mot, garage wanted to charge them nearly 1100 for repairs!

Think its down to about 400 now elsewhere!

Your getting massivly ripped off! That's an insane bill for not a lot of work, you might as well bend over the next time you see them! They'll be laughing all the way to the bank while you'll be crying going to yours [:^(] It's those kind of people that give the rest of us garages a bad name

Given current garage labour costs, the price seems believable. What do main dealers charge now, 90hr + VAT? Decent specialists are what, 60-70hr? Bare in mind we have no further details on the oil leaks, could have amounted to more labour time than you realise.

60-70 an hour for a specialist? You're making me like the place I take mine to more and more.

40 ph inc vat labour = sweeeeeeet

I prefer 0hr by doing all work myself, although 40hr seems very reasonable;)

I regularly hand out bills for well over 2k at my dealership.

Although I must say there's a hell of a lot more work involved in that, or cost of parts are expensive.

Does seem slightly excessive.. is that an independent?

Precisely. A good read of a Bentley manual could teach an ape how to change the rear disks on their mk2, so unless you had zero time on your hands why would you pay someone to do it?

I still say that a cambelt change, disk/pad/bearing swap, gear linkage change and setup, fitting heatshield is 3hr labour, assuming you come across no issues with rounded/siezed bolts. Then you have the two oil leaks, which could be anything from a 10minute rocker gasket swap to a gearbox off oil seal. Also the car is being serviced, so lets assume oil change, oil filter swap, air filter swap, general servicing as required..... I reckon if some of you DIY'ers took your cars to garages for repair you'd crap yourself;)

OK guys - you reckon I should get the car back pronto?

Can't find anywhere cheaper, any suggestions welcome. I can do some DIY but not sure I'd feel confident doing cambelts etc.
    The quotes I have are:

    Cambelt - 200
    Gear linkage - 63
Oil leaks (Rocker cover gasket) - 99
    Heat shield - 25
    Heater bypass pipes - 30
    Full service - 190
Brakes (labour only) and 2 new wheel bearings - 142
    Brake service - 35
Supply of my uprated discs and pads - around 300

Does is seem really excessive? I'm tempted to call them first thing in the morning and stop them where they are. Please, if any of you guys know someone that can do these alot cheaper please let me know, I'm based in Tunbridge Wells.

Rocker cover gasket is a few minutes job tops - that's just robbery. [8(]

    Full Service? Oil filter etc.

Tell them ANYTHING to get it back as I'm sure there's plenty of people on here would help or do those jobs for a damn site less.

YES! Takes 10mins to repair, gasket costs peanuts!
