Could anyone tell me if mk1 golf berg cup cars use longer custom wishbones, or did some have standard ones but run massively wide wheels? Same question for the rear, spacers behind the drums or just wide wheels? Thanx.
Both types exist - all cars sitting at various places on the development curve. The front does have genuine geometry implications, whereas the rear doesn't matter since, barring any additional flex from longer leverage, the stroke action of the suspension isn't affected.
I see. Do people have any preference on what is the best way to do it? Obviously it must be more expensive and complicated using different wishbones, but worth it?? I am officially in love with berg cup cars.
The best way to do it is to widen the wishbones, to restore the geometry and avoid using huge offset wheels. It just depends on how long a car has been used / developed, and how much R&D has been spent on it. My advice is not to get drawn into that sort of work unless you're quite ingenious, or ready for a walletry assault!
Firmly bespoke territory - there just aren't the production volumes to cater for the varying logic and whims of each owner.
although longer wishbones can be just that, measure a standard piece of equipment and lengthen it some what. bit of fabrication here, bit of measurey stick there. jobs a good un!
If your going Berg Cup also have a serious think about which kind of look your going for. Removable panels can look a bit sharper but works out a lot cheaper. Blended in style like the Reeves & my car will cost you a lot more unless you can do all the work yourself or at least stick to one colour to keep costs down . Similar threads i had before while collecting bits for my car: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161414 http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153120 Still hoping someone over here comes up with some cheap adjustable tubular wishbones & top mounts for the mk1. These are lovely ones on "mrhillclimber" mk1 from above thread of mine.
Still like em then Mike?! The top mounts are coming.... flowbench done, 16v carb inlets done, sump baffle kits done (sorta, subject to trial), divorce nearly done (!), top mounts next to be finished... you lot are just impatiant! The problem with moving the wheel a long way out, either with very wide wheels or spacers, or extending the wishbone, tubular or otherwise, is keeping the geometry and scrub radius in a sensible zone. Mine are the same length as standard but rose jointed and adjustable.
Thanx Mike, good reading, ill keep an eye on those threads and post up any info i can find out as to the best ways of doing it. Are you still searching for the right components or are those 10x15 and 8x15"s of yours going to fill the arches by themselves? Ive re-read your build thread and im loving the car so far, also the blue one its stunning! Im definitely in love with the Berg Cup golfs, they must handle out of this world with such a wide stance. Its funny you mention that about the type of look im going for with the arches, because i quite like the bolt on look, alot of the professional Berg Cup cars do it that way and look really good. Having them bonded like yours looks great but it has to be a proper job like you said, expensive.
Mine are 8x15 and 9x15 but due to funds/time of year i haven't been able to put any rubber on them though the rears will be a bit close with the 9's due to offset so will see what tyre style/curve works best, (my queries above are more to do with camber & getting a good tyre patch down on the road). The blue one should have all the livery on it soon. Good luck with yours.
