They have been mentioned on here before, but I thought I would mention them again so that they can help out any other newbie's in a similar situation to me.

Changing the dead dizzy on my MK2 GTI 16v, bolt holding it on rounded, getting nervous as I did not want to try drilling it out, and I couldn't afford to get the car towed.

Enter Irwin bolt grippers - had it off within 10 minutes... awesome! [:D]

Yep, I don't use them all that often, but every now and then they come in really handy.

I bought all three sets of Irwin Bolt Grips. I've never failed to be amazed by how easily they deal with dramas.

It's like having an "un-fck" button.

Got a set of these, really handy when down the scrap yard getting bits. As has been said when you need them they really do save the day and a lot of hassle.

So far I've spotted three different sets/sizes of Bolt Grips - one of the boxes you get has another 5 holes in it for the top-up set and then there's a separate box of 5 bigger sets. The bigger ones are ideal for removing locking wheel nuts.

they do and for a reason ;)

    I would suspect not ;)

Silverline stuff is not really that good over all. I have bought a few bits from them in the past and really would not spend the money on their kit going forward. the old saying buy cheap buy twice is springing to mind :)

If you read the Amazon reviews there's a number of problems with the Silverline ones. The biggest seems to be that they are made to work with a spanner or socket, while the Irwins have a 1/2" SD.

It wasn't cheap buying the full set of Irwins (Boxed set, expansion set, big set) but it still works out cheaper than take half the car apart to take the part to a machine shop and have a damaged bolt drilled out.
