Bored the other weekend (rear beam triangulation).

    My friend Ali (16valver) suggest i post this on here for some criticism :lol:

    Been thinking about making one for a while and testing any difference and have had the excuse of spare time waiting on parts for the rest of my shell prep.

    Looks nicely fabricated, as for any performance advanage?? im still not convinced it will outweigh the detrimental effect of the increace in unsprung weight.

    I'm planning on making one for my Mk1 somewhere down the line. IIRC, I think I've bought 3mm steel for the inverted towers and centre bracket, though it's ages since I made up some cardboard templates, and it's in the back of the shed. M12 rose joints. I've yet to run through in my mind what level of support hides inside the inverted towers for the main rose joint bolt.

    What plans have you for the tank type and location, now that the bars pass through the area?

    My only other thought was (IIRC) the works beams had the tower attachments canted over slightly

    ... just to centre the rose joints within their travel, but I guess you haven't run out of travel so just a detail aspect?

    :thumbup: :thumbup: Yep top work. Im impressed Goof. It does make a huge difference when running slicks as you are putting a massive load through the rear axle. I have this done to my MK3.

    As for the the increase in unsprung weight i really doubt a few hundred grams a side will make a noticable difference.

    gillm its not any lower to the ground than the works beams that chris has posted up, i already had this conversation with Ali last night :lol: It'll just be a different perspective as there are no stub axles discs etc to get a visual scale from at the mo.

    Its for a MK2 more of an experiment at the moment. I also notice someone has posted up my c**p build thread :o

    Lastly Chris the fuel tank that will be getting fabbed up will sit just under the wheel well which is now flat so a flat tank to try and lower some weight and i dont particularly want a tank behind me in the car.

    This is on my list of things to do. Making it doesn't look too bad, its the moving of the fuel tank and exhaust thats delaying me doing it.

    Works spec was M12 rose joints. Add threaded inserts to weld inside a tube - say 2-3mm walls, so the tube ID has to be in the region of 16-18mm. Plus wall thickess (2-3mm?) = 20-24mm OD tube.

    IIRC I've got 25mm in the shed.

    Could have gone seamless, but I just bought seamed. Struggled to see the point.

    do you have to weld an threaded insert in? could you not just tap a m12 thread into a smaller tube?
