54mm pistons, Lucas callipers. That's usually all you need to know. https://www.autodoc.nl/auto-onderde...i-19e-1g1/1656-1-8-gti-16v?criteria[200][]=54 Original numbers: 1A8 615 123 VAG 1A8 615 124 VAG 1H0 615 123B VAG 1H0 615 124B VAG 357 615 123A VAG 357 615 123AX VAG 357 615 123BX VAG 357 615 123C VAG 357 615 124A VAG 357 615 124AX VAG 357 615 124B VAG 357 615 124BX VAG 357 615 124C VAG 433 615 123A VAG 433 615 124A VAG 443 615 123 VAG 443 615 123F VAG 443 615 123FX VAG 443 615 124 VAG 443 615 124F VAG 443 615 124FX VAG 6N0 615 123C VAG 6N0 615 124C VAG 857 615 123 VAG 857 615 124 VAG 893 615 123 VAG 893 615 124 VAG 8A0 615 123 VAG 8A0 615 124 VAG 8D0 615 123 VAG 8D0 615 124 VAG 8E0 615 123 VAG 8E0 615 123X VAG 8E0 615 124 VAG 8E0 615 124X VAG
most likely 256mm based on the fact there are no dimples on the outside which most (not all!) 280mm calipers have. but as danpy said it doesnt matter if they're 256 or 280 the piston seal and slider pin kit is the same
That’s for your reply’s sounds like I need 54mm pistons then. interesting you say that about the 256 callipers as the brake discs off the car are 280 OD. Don’t know what its originally meant to have but seems like a few parts have been swapped out in this little golf’s lifetime by previous owners, certainly throwing me a few curveballs!
Often if car had 256 people keep the calipers as it saves bleeding them, you just use 256 pads, sometimes have to grind pins a little or use part worn pads to get calipers to squeeze over. That said there are 280mm castings without the dimples, you can confirm by measuring the distance from piston to caliper outer pad lip. 256 are 53mm Vs 61mm for 280
