My new like for like replacement discs from Hispec (285 mm upgrade) are 21mm thick. Even with the caliper wound fully in the caliper won’t go over the lightly worn pads and new discs. My question is are there thinner pads that will fit a 256mm standard 91 16v brake carrier and caliper? I’d prefer not to grind the caliper wider

We had to make our pads thinner on a bench sander. A couple of mm each one IIRC.

Thanks. Sorted it. Put the caliper in a soft vice and using a longer bar on the wind in tool managed to get a few mm

another option people use when fitting 256 calipers to 280mm brakes is grind the tops of the slider pins down a bit, this gives a little more clearance. just make sure you have a spanner thin enough to fit

I did that about 25 years ago, it doesn't leave much thread in the slider pins
