Well early 16v are 239 and very late runout 8v are 256 so it does depend on year...

Thanks for the reply guys. Was looking into some drilled and grooved discs but they were for the 16v.

Not sure on the exact date but its about 89 the 16v went to 256mm front discs . I had an august 88 on an E 16v and that was 239mm fronts (same as 8v). The rear discs are the same on all mk2 gti im pretty sure.

256 discs came in late 88, runout 8v never had 256mm discs. or if it did, no-one has produced any hard evidence to prove it

Fair enough. I heard it on here and my mate's K plate 8v had them, but could well have had an upgrade earlier in it's life!

yeah its been doing the rounds for years, as you say the cars with em maybe had them upgraded in the past. ive not found any data confirming they were fitted on the likes of elsawin, etka or any of the online parts places. usually they're pretty clued up on what got fitted where! ideally we need someone who has owned one from new, or maybe a list of option codes we can match up to etka to see fi there was one for a 'larger brake package' or whatever.

If you are going to upgrade go for 280mm ones. I have done it to my 90 spec 8 valve using mk3 calipers 16 valve hubs and G60 discs keeping it 4 stud.
