having watched the gadget show the other night and talk of buying bits and bobs to make their own PVR, is it worth doing? you don't seem to need much, TV card and a HDD. then a case for it to live in.

Any one done this themselves? guessing you can get HD TV cards these days?

Not very many DVB HD cards about at the moment, Only freesat HD.
You will need a meaty graphics card and a CPU to process it all.

Are you talking about building one from scratch or adding to your current PC?

building one but the cost of a card seems to be quite high still.

the HD box we've been looking at is only 230, versus the hassle of a using a 100 tv card and getting a HDD for it and building it all up to look smart and work.

Think this will get binned pretty quickly as an idea.

I've been running a media centre set up for over 6 years.

As Mat says it depends if you are building from scratch or adding to an existing computer.

This link probably offers more information than you require but can give some insight into what can be achieved.

The biggest problem is overcoming the wrath of the other half when the thing you have made stops working.

That and that alone is why i'm thinking 230 is worth paying for some peace and quiet:thumbup::lol:

Completely agree. If you are looking for a quiet no hassle box then Sky HD or a freesat HD box would do.
A PVR is hassle, noisey, takes ages to boot up and WILL let you down at one point.

Those problems can be overcome but not without spending alot of money on SSD's and quiet fans etc
