Hey all, been a while since I've been on the forum. Hoping someone may have experience with a little issue I have. I'm cooking my brakes on track. I destroyed a set of ferodo DS2500 at Bedford and another set + discs, I think, at Snetterton. The pads crumbled heavily on the edges and one pad surface came off the backing plate of the pad. My wheel centre caps melted off with the heat! Current setup is .. G60 280mm calipers 280mm Black diamond discs Ferodo DS2500 pads ATE200 fluid Proxy R1R tyres 195 50 15 and AD08RS 205 45 16 on my other wheels Car is stock in terms of interior Engine is R32 KW V3 suspension I'm more than happy with the braking power as I can willingly lock the front wheels once the pads are up to temp. No brake fade and great stopping power for the weight of the car. My question is... are calipers such as Tarox and Willwood (280mm) better at heat dissipation? Maybe a bigger setup like 305mm won't need to work as hard = more efficient - worried I'll lock the brakes too easily? Not interested in brake ducts at this point as I'd rather fit a more efficient brake setup that doesn't need additional cooling. Any advice?
Are your wheels not allowing airflow? I tracked mine, on normal road pads with no issues. Ds2500 apparently aren't great. 3000 would be a better track pad.
Can't say if wheels are providing enough airflow. They're Ronal LS. Standard pads run away from my car lol. Even with DS3000 I'm assuming will get very hot.
Even Nige Pinder/Pinderwagen, one of the fastest, most developed fwd vag cars around, stayed on g60 brakes with good pads for a very long time. I recall he was melting valve caps and so on, but the brakes were still sufficient. https://clubgti.com/forums/index.ph...w-pinderwagen-com.126104/page-26#post-2250748 He did eventually change to 4 pots, but it was a 400bhp track only beast. Some mk3 wishbones had a built in, plastic aero device on them, which directed air towards the brakes. Are your rear brakes working as well as they should be? By all means fit 4 pots, but if you do, you'll probably go up in disc size too. You have the oem vag option that Leon Cupras used, ie Brembos, Or lots of other aftermarket manufacturers. https://www.clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/mk2-golf-big-brake-kit-but-which-one.275432/
Ta, rear brakes are good and compensator has been adjusted after lowering. Maybe I should look at a deflector
Hey Dalj, Heat dissipation needs to be handled by the disc tbh. If the callipers get too hot, they will boil fluid regardless of being 4 pots or not. And yes as you say, more aggressive pads will put even more heat into the discs and will most likely boil ATE200 fluid too. You'll need to change to something like RBF660 or similar. I know you have limited clearance but bigger discs will help massively and 4 pots will give you better pad wear and feel. Gurds
Thats some serious driving you guys do to melt pads like that ? I was looking into upgrading the front brakes as I didn’t get enough braking force up front ! It seems you have enough…similar brake setup as yours but standard Ate pads and disc. It’s on a 5 stud converted diesel but I don’t track it. I have to be careful with what fits under 15” as in Romania even having wrong size tyres is a no no and they take away your registration papers and it’s a long winded process to get them back. I got a set of ATE calipers and 312mm Skoda vrs front discs and caliper carriers from a vw Passat v6 tdi 2001 on and they will bolt on the golf vr6 upright however you need to carefully choose the wheel- they fit under selected 16” wheels with decent spike clearance !
I have backing plates but my brakes look ok, they just under perform ! View attachment 25589 View attachment 25590 View attachment 25591 View attachment 25592
They re good but they crack easily if dropped ! I have 3 or 4 which broke like that- the screws holding boses are weak and crack…glueing with poliurethane silicone sealant is the only solution!
Phyl, I like your porker, I too have one- just a shell at the moment ! No engine, no box, no interior…and no papers as well !
Impressive, I don’t think I have seen 9ah before! Thanks, I’ve sold it now, parts and maintenance became too expensive.
I think headlights are the least of your worries Although, they don’t cost that here for sure. I just sold a pair of second hand ones for £250. LHD are cheaper than RHD and easier to get. Check out type911.com here in the UK for part prices etc. The owner, Matt, is a great guy and always willing to help. I got all my parts from him.
