Help my mate has a 1.3 p reg city golf which has stopped going into 5th gear! Anyone got any info on these please, could it just be linkage? or box?
Probably a linkage - dunno waht gear setup they have - all depends on what noise it made before it stopped working If the gearbox is fecked then would have heard it go - if didn't hear anything then maybe a worn linkage .. I lost 1,2,5 and R the other day because the linkage had come undone ....

P reg, duh , sorry didn't see that! Yeah, check out the gear linkage adjustment. If its the same or similar to the oldun's, then adjustment isn't too tricky. If this is the case, as it happened to me, I found the reverse 'gate' was alot bigger than the 5th gear 'gate'. Also, 1st became vague to find. Is the sideways movement on the gerastick still the same?
If you need any bits for the Citi golf, you should be able to get them from your local VAG dealer according to VAG Milton Keyens when I spoke to them Wednesday about bits for this car.
only 5 door is not gear linkage and makes a loud mettalic rattle which goes when clutch is depressed. goes into all other gears.
Sounds terminal to me. Normally the release bearing if kanckered will go quite once the clutch is depressed, and be noisy when it's not. bit strange though how it's only 5th gear that affected, so I think it'e more than just this possibly - something amiss in the box !!
is quiet when clutch is pushed down someone mentioned about 5 gear coming off shaft? can you get to this in situ
