Hi, When I bought my mkii 3 weeks ago i noticed that once I got home I needed to top it up...nothing to worry about I thought? BUT then the other night the coolant light came on again.

So I topped it up again and looked for any obvious sign of leaking at all and there's none? So I drove home and filled up the car at the loal filling station to be see that all the coolant was coming from under the car at what looked like high pressure?

Any ideas as to what's failed or gone wrong? Things that have been mentioned are head gasket, water pump, blocked pipes etc?

Any help would be much appreciated guys

    Thanks

    Dan

ps also are old mkii's prone to burn a little oil??

you need to get under the bonnet and have a look, there are stacks of places that could be leaking

Having a look in the engine bay would be a good start!.

Sometimes leaks don`t become apparent until the coolant is up to temperature (small splits and cracks that only open up at operating temp/pressure) hence why it may not have been obvious the first time you looked.

Get it up to temp again, and if it`s really hosing out at what you describe as `high pressure` than it will be immediately obvious where it`s coming from. Most likely just a hose that needs replacing.

Same thing tonight whilst On the way to the garage, at temperature it started to jet the coolant out again as from where I can see it's coming from somewhere on the left side in the area of the coolant bottle!

Hopefully is just a hose and nothing major! Still don't know why is seems to burn oil tho? Is this normal?

    Will know the outcome tomorrow!

If its been to the moon and back some oil burning will be inevitable
How many miles is it claimed to have covered?

The old girl has just covered 122,000 with full VW dealer service history from new! Will find out this afternoon what the problem is with it?

My 16v used to lose coolant, it would empty the header tank in 300 miles (a week of driving basically). I was fairly happy topping it up, a couple of months ago I dropped an egg in it and it's been fine since.

As for oil burning, my 16v is on 153k, engine never been apart, and it does noticeably burn oil (you can smell it) but doesn't use any more than half a litre over 1000 miles.

Yep. You can get them off most modern VWs, mine is off an 03 plate Caddy.
