    90G Mk2 8v GTI on digi...

Car has always lost a tiny bit of coolant weeping around the waterpump (1/2 litre per 400ish miles) - but took it out today and it's suddenly losing 2 or 3 litres per 50 miles :(

Don't think it's headgasket, as no steam from exhaust / oil is clear (changed <1000 miles ago) and oil level hasn't risen. Also no pressure in the header tank just after turning the engine off. Also don't think it's the matrix as it works fine, gives good heat and doesn't steam up / smell of antifreeze.

Couldn't really see much in the dark / rain tonight, but I can't feel any water / deposits around hose ends. It needs a new thermostat as it never goes above 1/3 on the gauge unless sitting in traffic for ages, and the oil stays at 90 on a run, so no overheating problems.

Could it be a pinhole leak from the metal pipe? It looks scabby as...
Search has shown up it's probably that / flange on block / header tank cap. It's on the black cap, and come to think of it there was a bit of residue on the tank around the cap...don't have sound deadening though so couldn't tell if the water was coming out there. Could 2l escape through there?!

Sorry about the long post....any help greatly appreciated!

sounds like your along right lines with head flange/header cap/metal pipe.. all cheap enough would be tempted to change them same time you do stat for piece of mind. would also have good nosey round rad and apparently core plugs can be problem too.

if you want to know for sure someone on here (maybe on coolant faq?) had clever idea of puttin 20ish psi into coolant system whilst engine in cold. line from header to rad is good place to tap in
