Do I need a new thermo time switch, or is it something else?

My 1.6 mk1 starts from cold on the first turn of the key and runs well as if the cold start system is working perfectly. After about 5 seconds revs drop and splutters, droping on to 2 or 3 cylinders and the car required coaxing for a minute or two before it smooths out. Car is well serviced and runs well when warm.

    Thanks

May be the warm up regulator, but when mine was playing up the car just cut out with no misfiring.

I think you can test the WUR using a resistance meter thingy, electrics are beyond me

You can test the resistance to check whether it's caput or not. Can't remember what it should be, but the figures are quoted in the Haynes/Bentley manual (all my copies are in boxes, in middle of moving!)

the 5 injecor stays on for 3 to 5 seconds when the engine temp is below 30c if it's working right

    see the thread below

if you suspect the cold start system is to blame simply disconnect the plug to the 5th injector straight after the car has started. if the problem still occurs, its not the cold start system (unless the 5th injector is stuck open, but this is unlikely)

as above the 5tgh injector will only spray if the engine is cold, and only when cranking. once its started the system is no longer required :) the above test will rule out some kind of wiring fault causing the 5th injector to spray when it shouldnt
