The rev's on my A3 1.8 TS bounce slightly when idleing at traffic lights after driving, they bounce 4/5 times and then settle on around 900rpm, the revs bounce between 500 and 1000rpm..it aint too bad to be honest, It does'nt happen upon starting, just straight after driving/accelerating.. but I want to cure it before it gets worse....I did have a similar problem on my MK2 golf gti 16v, which was alot worse and it was the Idleing valve which just needed cleaning with some carb cleaner....is this a similar problem...

have you done a TBA (throttle body alignment)?
ign on (from cold), not start engine, and wait for a couple of minutes.

    OR

Cleaning the throttle body down with carb cleaner

    OR

    MAF sensor is playing up

as in what I said above...

    "(throttle body alignment)?
ign on (from cold), not start engine, and wait for a couple of minutes."

Its respans the throttle as a reset of sorts.. If you clean it I would advise a TBA anyhows.

just wondering if yours is dbw or cable throttle as I type this.

My cousin had a similar fault on his 1.8T golf, turned out to be the MAF sensor, it also developed degraded performance with the idle problem as well though.

Do you need to cycle the pedal from idle to WOT at all to give the ECU input from both ends of the scale, or does it just set the idle point and assume a set amount of travel?

No the motor does a wipe across its span..(dbw) you leave it alone to do its thing.
its a quiet high pitched noise as it moves.

Basic settings, measure block 60 of 69 I think. Run the test it sould come up ok.
Check you fault codes codes too, this will probably tell you the fault in the first place.
