My mate is currently rebuilding his 10 year project but is unsure how the loom should be layed out in the engine bay (And he is a mechanic for VW). His car is an early 8v gti (about 1985), we've looked on the net but were unsuccessful in finding any images - please could someone help??

in the electrical section there is a fusebox faq. will tell you what col wires and what it powers . so it should give you an idea where it will go

Once the loom is in the engine bay it will become fairly obvious which plugs go where as they will only really reach one part of the engine each.

engine loom comes up from behind servo, then along the bulkhead. 1st hole in bulkhead is for coil/tci/ecu loom, next hole is for the wiper loom plus secondary ecu connectors if 6v or digi. then loom goes down the bulkhead and along the chassis leg, mfa sender goes under the battery then down the hole in front of chassis leg. engine loom goes across the gearbox behind the clutch cable, there should be a tower there with a hole which a clip pops into to secure the loom. then it goes from there to side of head, front flange, starter etc should be self evident.

lighting loom splits at bulkhead, 1 half goes direct to driver side lights, other side goes along the bulkhead next to the engine loom, down and under the battery again to driver side lights. dont forget to plug in the horn loom which is clipped to under side of slam panel and near battery
