So I have a 1986 1.8 8v gti EV engine and would like to replace the distributor cap, to a bosch one.
The cap at the moment has no part number on it and when I am searching I seem to get differing answers
    Factual help gratefully received

    7Zap's a bit ambiguous - https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf/go/1986-64/9/905-207000/

My reading of their info. is the dizzy at No. 7... 6 905 205 AA is for EV engines made between 20/8/85 and 20/7/86.

I'm going to speculate that your dizzy number 026 905 205 AA is the same one but an earlier / later issue of 6 905 205 AA and therefore compatible / interchangable.

RJ may be able to confirm that.

The distributor cap they show for 6 905 205 AA, and therefore presumably yours too if I'm correct, is at No. 2 (no brackets) 027 905 207... look at the notes column as it cross references it to your dizzy No. 7 amongst others.

This is where the confusion appears as No. 7 also features in the notes for the cap at No (2) (with brackets) - 027 905 207 A, but there's also the proviso that it's for RD / PL engine codes which suggests there's some difference as borne out later when you read on.

This is your dizzy below, but using the Bosch number 0237 020 133

    https://www.x1-autoteile.de/index.p...37+020+133&groupnode=&genArtNr=683&carId=1654

You'll see the various component parts and numbers. The Hall sender / vac. cannister match what you have so a good chance the rest is also correct.

The caps Bosch number is 1 235 522 375 and it shows as spanning the same EV production dates 7Zap give which would further suggest it's correct / now being confirmed by two sources at least.

Problem is if you then reverse reference Bosch 1 235 522 375 you get VW 027 905 207 A which is the one 7Zap suggests is for RD/PL engines only.

027 905 207 A also seems to be for engines made between July '84 to July '85 and Jan '87 to Dec. '81 (therefore skipping your year entirely).

If you take 7Zap out of it and rely on the other site linked too only the confusion's removed, depends on how much store you place on one or the other but maybe a starting point to narrow things down better.

Well I am glad it is not just me confused by it. My chassis no. Is wvwzzz19zGW428151 and registered April 86.
I cant see why an EV engine distributor wouldn't be the same for them all !

Some, but not all of the references I found showed 'from / to' engine numbers as a way of identifying which dizzie is for what, but your number bears no relationship to any of them unfortunately.

Someone with ETKA might be better able to see if 027 905 207 and 027 905 207 A have any material differences that may make them engine code specific.

Might just be a case of one superceded the other or there's some other minor change in design that's of no significance.

If it wasn't for 7Zap throwing some doubt on it, I'd have been plumping for Bosch 1 235 522 375 based on what I've seen elsewhere.

Thanks for looking. I had another search tonight and can not believe how mind boggling and contradictory different sellers are on the parts for this

OK for 026905205AA in 86, you need rotor arm 055905225B and cap 027905207 or 027905207A. The only difference between the 2 seems to be 027905207 is plain, 027905207A has the nice black screened cap on top of it

Thanks for the help Gents, a plain one is on order. Only because it had a plain one on b4, but I strangely like the black cap.

That's good news that they're essentially the same thing, should help when shopping about... looks to be the plain one's just an earlier type that's likely meant to slide into No. 3 in the schematic and the later one has replaced the tin screen with that black plastic version incorporated into the design.

On a side note, there was talk a while back about Beru being OE on VW's, noticed this pressed into a tin shield (W. Germany should help date it!)
