I had one in my first mk2 golf and wasn't sure if it was a factory thing, dealer added or otherwise. It never leaked and doesn't require a tray / drain channels like the steel sliding ones. Also being glass it let light in even when closed I recently came across this brochure and it seems as though it was a dealer thing - but does anybody know more about them?
Thought mk2 genuine roofs were all steel, but there's an audi, 80 possibly that a glass one was in, I may be wrong with that though, and if they fit a mk2. The pop up type was a retrofit, possibly offered by the dealer possibly farmed out to a "specialist " third party or let Kelvin the YTS lad loose with a rag wrapped hacksaw blade and a brand new car. I've fitted them myself in the past to some old minis, and my mk4 escort estate which became so escort swimming pool after leaving it open and a sudden heavy downpour.
We used to have a guy from Kings Lynn called Reuben fit those old tilt sunroofs to 'new' cars (I'm talking mk4 Escorts mk2 Fiestas so late 80s early 90s) at the Ford dealers I used to work at, he just used to rock up, lob a carboard template on the roof without seemingly measuring anything! Cut the roof out with a nibbler , chop the headlining and fit the tilt sun roof. Didn't take him long. Have heard recently that he's passed away, he used to do seat trimming and repairs too.
Mine was webasto and leaked like a sieve, would never buy a car with one fitted again. They’re obviously only optioned in tin tops
After market, either fitted by the dealer at point of purchase or at a later time. I remember my brother having one fitted into his MG metro in 1987
