my 16v manifold is cracked and sounds a bit pants when cold

i cant face changing it myself with no way of heating the nuts, so how much do you think a garage will charge?

and if they snap the studs what happens then?

btw..orig manifold, never been off

didn't snap any studs, got to but new copper nuts though.

I did it when i changed the head gasket, i took the inlet manifold off first, didn't take long.....give it a try worse thing that can happen is like you say snap a stud, then you just buy a new one :)

depends on where the stud snaps really, as for you can't see all the nuts you just have to 'hug' the engine and have a feel around for them :)

......but if you don't fancy doing it then just phone/visit a few garages for quotes, no harm done :p

the worst bolt is head to manifold he second lower one on the dizzy end of the head

have a bash at that 12mm I think although 11mm sometimes works

if thats rounded it's a crap job if that one comes out crack on with the rest

the second nut is tight to get at see this manifold I had to use the grinder to remove that particular nut

just rang c&r ...they want 185 to swap a manifold, thats assuming nothing breaks [:x]

i can take my head of and get new gaskets etc for cheaper than that

I don't blame them for that price it can and most likely will be a C*** of a job if the manifold has never been off before

the main rsole is the second rear lower one as I mentioned above if you can get that one off the rest are easy'ish

the 6 downpipe studs are easy'ish from underneath very likely to snap but that don't matter since your manifold is cracked

I don't know about access with a flame I would'nt risk it personaly as it is quite tight to get at some nuts

I assume your manifold is cracked about where marked on this pic ?

My tip is get hold of a set of those ratchet ring spanners, I was having a pig of a time with my 16v manifold when getting the head off to do the head gasket and they made it so much easier. Most of the nuts can be done with lots of WD40 and an 11mm (I think) socket as above but there are a few underneath that are tricky so get the ratchet ring on those and save skinning your knuckles. :)

Mine came off with no snapping and that was the original one with about 140k miles on it at the time.

I would think a garage would quote a big price in case anything goes wrong and they need to renew studs etc.

believe me, a 16v is sooooo much easier to remove an exhaust manifold from than an 8v!!

just had a look...12mm spanner is loose, 11mm wont fit on although it could be cus of rust

could really use some 6 point spanners to help not rounding em off
