I have recently revived my 1.6 driver which I purchased with a blown head gasket. Now running with a.1.8 lump from another historic girl.

The exhaust is a twin tipped gti exhaust I believe. Sounds nice when idling, however I am finding that driving her over 2.5k revs or 55mph becomes far too noisey.

Where or what should I consider to make her enjoyable to drive on an A Road?

Yes that about the rpm when drone starts ,can be caused by the front resonator being removed but most likely the second to last muffler not there or blown out inside, this IMO causes the worst drone as I found out with one of my Mk 2's.
Someone had removed it so I tried sound deadening in the spare tyre well as suggested by some...what a waste of money and time ,couldn't bear it anymore and got a new one welded in.
    Cheers .

Thank you for the heads up, there is somebody selling a standard 1.8 8v exhaust about 60 miles away. When I venture under the car I will see what configuration the PO has had. I may buy the standard and swap a d change....

Hopefully for a manageable sound level.
