I think it will be okay really , its felt pretty quick with the 1.8 carb engine in and went off the clock off easily.

Just to clarify, I can use the gti clutch and flywheel to mate up to the carby box ?

In a Mk1/2, the 16V box has a larger (24mm?) spline compared to the rest of the boxes (22mm?) - therefore, the 16V friction plate accordingly has the larger spline. You can use the flywheel and pressure plate from the 16V.

The rule of thumb is that you match the clutch friction plate to the box you are using.

    Hope this helps :)

    So

    1.8gti 16v engine + 6w box + sachs 8vgti clutch kit + gti 16v flywheel = win ??

Will any gti 8v clutch kit work or just the sachs one ?

Thank you guys for helping with my constant questioning, I just want to get it right first time I don't have the money to be buyin multiple wrong parts lol!!

    No worries about questions!

I've never actually seen any proof but it's generally believed that the 16V pressure plate has more clamping force than the 8V - rubjonny has specified that particular clutch kit because it has everything you need in one box, which makes things super easy for you.

In answer to your question, yes, it's a win! However, you could just go and buy any Mk2 8V GTI clutch kit and it'd work fine.

    Hope this helps!

any 8v clutch kit will do you, but its just that I know for a fact the pressure plate in the kit is deffo a 16v spec one, plus it also includes the 6 pressure plate bolts you need and the grease. Some kits dont have the bolts and it works out expensive sicne they're VAG only!

If your old 1.8 cab flywheel is ok you can use that, or an 8v GTI flywheel, or a 16v flywheel. They're all the same, only difference is the cabby fly will have the ignition timing mark in the wrong place, but you can just mark your own one on there with tipex or something, use the EV measurement:

I have the 16v flywheel so I will use that as timing marks will be correct!

Sachs clutch kit sounds a good idea, do u know how much they are ?

cool, if the gsf one is also a sachs clutch then its all good, I thought they mostly sold LUK clutches, which dont tend to have all the extras like the bolts in. Soem people have reported issues with LUK ones too, I've always gone with sachs and have had no probles (2.0 8v, 1.8 16v, 2.0 16v x2)
