What sort of milage do you get out of a full tank of petrol and what sort of average mpg do you get.

    Iam looking at getting either a mk4 R32 or a mk5 gti.

    Thanks[:D]

I had a MK4 R32 and managed a pathetic 20mpg and if I booted it, then expect well below 18mpg

I now have a MK5 GTI and its light years ahead of the MK4 R32 and just as quick. Use 97RON petrol and I am constantly returning near 30mpg even if I boot it!

MK5 GTI is the better car

    I was averaging 23mpg.

    18.9mpg to work

28mpg at very best (on a REALLY steady run)

I never managed to get 300miles out of a full tank (55)

So I sold the engine and fitted a 2.8 instead. I can get 28mpg all day long out of that, 36mpg on a good run. I do miss the torque though[:^(]

    Ok...

26mpg on average which comes from 28-29mpg on a motorway trip cruising at 85-90mph and 20-21mpg round town.

Miles per tank can range from anywhere between 280-330 but generally it's around the 300 mark. I don't exactly hang around either.

No point in buying an R32 if you're going to be worrying about fuel economy though. If economy is what you're after buy a TDI.

IMO neither car is superior over the other but it depends what you want to use it for and what you want from a car.

I only work 5 miles away. But I was sick of putting petrol in the bugger after a month!

The week I spent 200 on fuel was the last straw.

Worth it if you can afford it.

    Thanks

I am not worrying too much about fuel economy, but I didn't want a car that does 15mpg everywhere. I am driving a rover 618 at the moment as my mk2 is not too well. I am lucky if I get 250 mile out of a full tank which costs about 42 at the minute.

You can pick up either a 03/04 R32 with 15 - 20k on the clock for about 17 - 18K or a year old GTi with half the miles for the same.

GTi would be my chioce. Its a brand new car still with 2 years warranty left and no MOT for another 2 years and running it will be cheaper.

However the r32 sounds and looks great but is a car designed 5/6 years ago.

    Nice position to be in.

    Understatement !

    Very true!

And if you're only bothered about having 'the latest thing' or not.
