    Hi,

    Rebuilding my 16v gearbox at the moment. While its apart and in no rush to get back togetheri was wondering what do with the casing.

    I was thinking just cleaning it all up, but i saw lots of chromed and a polished mk2 box at edition 38.

    What finish do you think looks best?

    My personal fav is a nicely painted box. Check out H8SV8S's box for his project.

    He has used silver wheel enamel as far as I know. Should be a hard durable finish.

    PM him for more info if you need any.

    Yeah, I'd love to find out exactly what paints and methods were used to get that finish. That looks lovely! Excellent job.

    Ooh H8SV8S's gearbox looks fantastic! I did mine with some high temp engine paint the same as I used for the engine, looks ok - nice and clean but not exactly a work of art! [:$]

    I just use etch primer, then a coat of any silver paint that doesn't need laquered. If you're painting bare steel bits, even the SUPER-cheap stuff they sell at Chhristmas and the like, not meant for outdoor use, lasts forever. I've an alternator mount on an engine that's been lying in the garden for 2 years painted with the cheap shit, and it still hasn't rusted - didn't even use etch primer on it, or laquer!

    4 year bump... :lol:

    I'm gonna be cleaning my gearbox casing and want to tart it up a bit.

    Etch Primer sounds interesting - What is it as I'm chemically retarded?

    I'm thining some sort of serously hard-assed and chip resitant silver paint - any recommendations?

    etch primer bites into the metal so that it shouldnt flake off

    try frost.co.uk they list some silver alloy paints n stuff

    But, don't ever try Frosts Lacquer for polished metals.

    It's absolutly S H I T and flakes off in an instant.!

    On my 020 I used (I think...) Plastikote Super Enamel Silver, and some cheap Halfords laquer;

    [IMG]

    On my 02A, I`ve used a `crackle` finish in black;
