Gearbox inspection timing hole bung - part no and how to replace

    Any tips on how to undo it

    They screw out in theory, but they often seize in place and end up coming out in pieces
    Why do you want to remove it?

    That looks like an empty hole in your picture?
    Mine simply has some sort of stopper which pulls out. It may have used to screw in or out but not any more. It may not be original of course :lol:

    Yes Phil, a pop out plastic cap goes into the centre of the screwed in piece.

    Aha, thank you. So that does beg the question already asked, why does Mr Tak want to remove the screwed in piece?

    This is what the setup should look like.

    But as Tristan says, chances are it will crumble when you try to remove it and fall into the bell housing.
    If you want to see if it will budge, you could find a bolt with the same size head on it as the plug, put a nut on the bolt then and try and screw it out.

    Bit of a long story, but we are doing a cambelt job, and didn't mark up the intermediate pulley as we thought it only drove the oil pump, not the dizzy cap. I wanted to remove the intermediate pulley to sort out the metal cambelt cover - to derust it.
    Looking at rubjonny's digifant tuning guide it appears we can help time the engine through this flywheel hole. Hence why we were keen to remove it.
    Then we can get the engine's timing all good.

    However perhaps we can time it without looking through the hole?

    I know the rotor arm should point to a little mark on the dizzy body when cam n crank pulleys are at the OT mark/arrow

    Where-as this I think is the 16v gearbox? which has a difference plug...part 10?
    showing my lack of knowledge now i have no idea what gearbox code a stock PB engine or any golf for that matter:

    this hole gives you access to crank TDC timing marker plus the 6 degree BTDC ignition timing marker. theres a TDC marker on crank pulley, and if you have a timing light with an advance dial on it you can use that on the crank pulley as well

    oh and plug 10 on the other diagram is for the G60 02a gearbox, the 16v still uses 020 box so same green cap as normal. the 1.6 models use a white cap, as they run a 190mm flywheel. the reason for the different caps for different flywheel is becasue these are designed for use with special VW timing equipment. the plug ensures correct positioning of the tool to the different flywheel, and it reads from the werid machined lumps you see on the flywheel

    You won't pay anything on £3.60. for stuff from china it's £13 before you start paying duty or fees.

    Back to the matter in hand, you should be able to see the timing mark without removing the large part, through the hole in the middle of it.

    If they even put the right price, a load of stuff I've got from AliExpress is just marked as costing pennies, not the actual price

    Just to finish this thread.
    Does anyone know the dimension of allen key needed to remove this plug?

    27mm. Literally just measured one I have in the shed, with a vernier calipers.
