Hi guys got a strange one. Been trying to figure out why my speedo is 10mph quicker at 70. Its a 1989 16V GTI with a KR engine. It should have a 2Y gear box in it but when I looked at plate at the bottom it looks like it has a 6w transmission code but it's been scratched out. Another strange thing is that it has a LUK 621 0283 16 clutch in it but that clutch doesn't look like it should be for the 16v. Could it just be a different bell housing?
There are different size/colors for the pinion on the speedo cable. My 1.6 with 4t has a red pinion for example, still gps reads about 10km less than cluster at say 160km/h. Red(171957821B) is 15teeth and white(171957821A) is 16teeth, to read less needs more teeth.
ok so 6W is a montego box: https://www.clubgti.com/forums/inde...-speed-any-info-about-it.222783/#post-1968939 it has FD ratio 3.94:1, and so you need a white speedo gear to match rather than the original red: http://brokevw.com/020ratios.html other thing it can be is if the needle is ever removed and fitted back on at the stop, speedo is 10mph out across the range. it should be fitted to a alignment mark just before then lifted over the stop: https://www.4130-products.com/step/install/index.htm
Thanks rubjonny! I can't get my head around why the 6w code has been scratched off! The rest of the gearbox looks like the later 020 with the hole higher up than the bump as seen on http://www.brokevw.com/020oil.html It even has the green vw cover! Is this gearbox and clutch combo adequate for a 16v KR? And is it possible that a 6w bellhousing has been put onto a 2y box or is it all one piece? Cheers again!
as long as its a decent make you'll be ok on the clutch, its possible casings have been swapped about in the past so you never know really on old stuff like this. one way to work it out is drive in each of the gears hold revs and check vs gps speed then use this gear calculator to try and nail down what gearset it has: http://www.scirocco.org/gears/
