I doubt very much if slackness in your timing chain will affect fuel economy. If your timing is out though, that would. However, you say the car is running fine which would indicate your timing if fine. That said, have you checked the timing to make sure it is spot on?
What is the best way to check timing? The car runs well once it is warm. However, I noticed that when I floor it, in neutral, and let of the gas pedal it goes way lower than the idle rpm and it almost dies for a 0.5 sec. Then it gets back to the stable 1100rpm I guess or something like that…
