there is more to power than just the peak bhp figure, i drove a clio 182
yesterday, it was quick from 5200 onwards but my old G60 would still be
    all over it.

I agree, that is definately true.

But in general VW's have heavier chasis's than other cars, which is another limiting factor (although alot more safer to be in).

The 8v's defo have lots of torque, but just not enough power I feel.

old civic vti's are about 160bhp so i'd be impressed if you could keep up-they are also appaulingly badly built.

sat in a friends '93 esi and there was more road noise from the rear arches with all the interior in than there was in my old golf all stripped out!

The MK5 GTI is NOT a 2.0 FSI engine. That is the MK5 GT.

The new MK5 GTI will have a Turbocharged 2.0 FSI unit pumping out 200bhp. It is not available until the end of this year

I've driven the 2.0 litre FSI N/A engine in an audi A3, and I wasnt impressed. Maybe it hadnt loosened up yet, I dont know, but there wasnt much low down grunt at all. It was a rev happy engine, and the car didnt feel particularly quick even compared to my mk3 8v!

I wouldnt buy a car with that engine in.
