Hi guys, I own a mk1 1983 cabriolet, which has HUGE electrical problems! Anyways i'm coping with it now but if anyone has any more suggestions thats kewl. Wipers - slow heater - slow (heater matrix?) lights - dim and many other things relating to low voltage i'm assuming? I've tested various bits (mostly lights) and everything seems to be loosing voltage somewhere between the battery and the switch. hmm does that make sense? tbh i haven't looked at it for a while, just sort of forgot about it. But it's quite annoying!! Ne ways help would be kewl Gem x
You may have already done some of these but have you tried: Checking all earth connections to engine/chassis, checking condition of battery terminals, checking for water ingress round fuse box, making sure the condition of the alternator/battery ok?
battery terminals are good - just had new ones and a new battery. Fuse box is also new, alternator is fine tested that a few months back. And all earths are good too. grr it's a bit of a pain! lol
wipers are slow on the early mk1s, two thing sto do, take em apart and see if there is rust on the stalks, then grease em up, second is to go and buy a new mk1 cab wiper unit. how is the heater slow? fans? or to warm up? are the lights dimmer than usual? you could check the matey matey website for tips on improving your headlights.
cure the wipers by simply taking them of the spindles, removing the motor from the car and cleaning the mechanism up. The spindles that the arms sit on always nearly always corroded.
the heater fan is slow. Speed 3 is like about speed one on a normal golf. Fine warming up etc. Ah thats kewl about the wipers i might give those things a go. Lights - sorted i wired them directly from the battery, just the interior ones that are still dim. Edited by: gemzybabe
The slow fan and dim lights sound like there is an earth that has corroded or has become disconected somewhere. If not then go around the car and check/clean all the connections.
