I would say if people are paying 200-300 a month on insurance they need there head checking!! If your 17 and go buy a golf gti it was never going to be the smartest choice to begin with. Old cars are just a pain to insure. My SLK 350 straight from the factory as I collected it in Bremen was half the cost fully comp to insure as my E reg golf. Work that one out.
My insurance is a joke I'm 32 and pay 450. Got an apprentice at work who's been quoted 5500 or 4500 with a black box on a 1.0 corsa now that's a joke.
I'm in the same boat I'm 19 a apprentice mechanic. I don't have a license yet as insurance on anything is ridiculous. I'm currently looking for a 1.3 and swap all the nice bits out off the gti e.g. seats. Then you have a reasonable daily and can have swap cars in a few years and build the 1.3 into a track car or whatever. Ooh btw I'm being quoted about 3500
Ah- insurance price threads :-( always grim reading these days. I recall back in the day 1988, paying 900 for an RS1600i then 1,100 for a mirafiori 131 racing both equal to how kids get ripped off these days- but back then there was more well paid jobs than you could poke a stick at :-) These days, being 42 and officially half way to being dead car insurance is proper cheap and I drive like a fricking head case :-0 It's commercial insurance that knobs me off these days....they don't care how old I am, they just want a slice of what my vans earn me :-(
Insurance is a right ball ache! I swear they just drop there finger randomly on a sheet of numbers and add them up. 5 years ago I insured my Mk2 Jetta GX (1.6) for 290 fully comp. Yet my Mk2 Polo (1.0) cost 350.... When I passed my test in 2003 I paid 1400 to insure a 1.2 Corsa 3rd Party Fire & Theft. I know a guy paying almost 3000 for a 1.2 Fiesta!!
mk2 golf gti 8v 134 a year (comp) lancaster classic limited to 3000 miles passat 1.9 tdi (130)comp 350 a year(12k). uk licence 25 yrs, no points, max no claims. glad in some ways now im over 40, looking at what insurers want for younger drivers its stupid money. my first car at 17 was a 84 escort 1.3gl and that was 1550 a year in 1989.that was comp as it was on finance.if it was me i would get a couple of years under my belt with a smaller engine.a couple of yrs no claims will make a big difference.good luck shopping around.
