What head gasket do I use on a KR block that has been overbored to 83mm? Is there a standard gasket I can use, or do I need to obtain an aftermarket one?

    Thanks,

    Trev

If you don't think that Andy947 is right then try a 9A/6A or ABF gasket?

Think that 9A, etc. are same bore diameter as KR though...?

    Use the ABF metal gasket.
They are better made and have a very fine rubber coating on them which helps its sealing properties, and require less of a rough finish to the head.

It is going out to 83mm to give 1870cc (or whatever the exact figure actually is).

Just dragging this thread up again because I could do with ordering the head gasket for this engine now, but I'm still not sure what to get.

I'm hoping to get a suitable gasket from VW.

Some of you guys have suggested an ABF gasket, which has a bore diameter of 82.5mm. Would this be okay to use with my block which has been bored to 83mm?

    Thanks

    Trev

The bore diameter of the ABF is bigger than 82.5mm. Thje bore of the block maybe 82.5 but I know the bore in the gasket is bigger.

Just checked the 2 I have in the garage. One is a used ABF the other a 2E. Both have an 84mm bore. It would have to be bigger to allow for any indescrepency's.

Ah - thanks mate! Much appreciated :)

Looks like I'll be getting an ABF gasket then. I guess GSF will be a good source - or would you recommend a VW one?

As long as it's the layer metal one then it'll be ok. It has a very thin coating of what seems like rubber which help with the sealing.
I've been using one on mine for a little while with no problems at all.
Will use on on the new engine too [:D]

Thanks again gents. I have to make an order from VW anyway, so I'll pay through the nose for VW one.

I've got my ABF gasket now. There's nothing in particular I need to know about using a metal head gasket like this, is there?

The only thing 'wrong' that I can see with this ABF gasket I got from VW is the fact that one of the two 'pegs' does not align with a hole in the gasket. Should I just drill a hole for it? I also noted that some of the other holes for waterways / oil don't align perfectly - but it's okay, yeah?
