Red from car (+12v) goes to yello and red on stereo.

Brown from car (earth) goes to black on stereo

Grey/Blue from car (illumination) shouldn't be needed.

Yellow/white from car, also not needed.

Black wire from car thats attached to aerial wire (aerial amp power) goes to blue wire from stereo.

so which one in constant positive...head unit needs constant positive to keep all the settings for radio and the code. the red from car goes through ignition key and is only 12v when key is turned.

There is somthing wrong with your cars wiring then, or this is a new wire that someone has added. From the factory, VW only provide a constant power wire (which is red) to the stereo area. Usually you connect both stereo powers to this. I actually prefer it this way.
Ignition power wires in MK2s are always black in colour.

You'll have to dig deeper to find the original wires by the sound of it. If you can't find them, then add a new constand wire, fused, from the fuse box to the stereo area.

does anyone know if all VWs come with the illumination wire? or from which year onwards? Could do with finding the one in my Rallye (if its there) and plugging it in.

installdoctor doesn't list the mysterious yellow/white wire.

    anyone else?

    the illumination wire is blue/gray.

Pull the lower dash trim out (although yours is a polo dash, right?).

Anyways, if the large multi plug near the steering column is still there then you should see the grey/blue wire.

If not, then you can just splice into an existing one (they don't use much current.

Failing that, grab the wire straight from the back of the headlight switch.

yeah I have a bit of a wiring nightmare under the dash - its a RHD loom adapted to LHD so chances are they lost that wire [:s]

Still I could just tap it off the headlight switch I suppose. I presume all I need is something that becomes live while the lights are on?

(sorry for thread hijack, but it is kinda relevant :p)

Yep, you could use the sidelight feed if you want the wire to be a constant 12v when the lights are on.

If you use the blue/grey wire, then you can adjust the voltage (dim the lights) with the other dash stuff.

Just depends if you need constant or variable power.

I'll have to check the manual for the alpine HU but I think it just needs a switching current to tell it to dim the display. Cheers! :)
