if its a digifant gti head you can drill the carby coolant waterway, but some of the k-jet ones you cant do this because they have the air shrouded injector system so theres a vac pipe where you want your hole to be

^ You may know of an exception RJ, but all the DX/EV 1800 Kjet heads I've seen have that vac pipe.

the really old ones dont have it, but then these ones would also be mech tappets anyway.

basically if it doesnt have top hats on the injectors, its non-air shrouded and vac connection isnt there. if injectors have the top hat then its air shrouded and does have the vac connection :)

edit: some etka digging says top hats came in 1985

My 85 Scirocco GTX has, or rather 'had' them, till I took them off fitting the temporary Digifant engine.

I have only seen 2 with air shroud tapping for hose. 4 without, but I do only muck around with older sheit in general.

Thanks for the info lads, this is certainly a interesting read.

So, with my 1.8 head, how much does it need to be skimmed before the CR is around 9.5-10:1?
Or would it better to skim the block?

I've been offered a complete 1.8 engine from a Golf GL too, (in fact, the same engine I was going to have the head from for my home porting)

its already 10:1 on the 1.8 carby, same as the gti. its the 1.6 which has the lower compression :)

    Ah awesome!

So if I had a choice of head, GTi and a carb head, which would be best to go for - for me to rework and port?

GTI heads have bigger valves... so GTI really. Not a massive amount in it though.
