How can I find out if someone’s dead?

Someone at work reckons he heard that a girl I went college with is no longer about...how can I find out if I have no other sources of information (friends/family).

Is there an online certificate database or something?

 

Was it an accident or something? Could try local newspaper archives (local paper?)
